Make Sure Love Is the Only Thing in the Air – Not Pollutants!

Don’t Allow Poor Indoor Air Quality To Ruin the Romance This Valentine’s Day

As couples make plans for their romantic evenings together this Valentine’s Day, they probably aren’t thinking much about their indoor air quality. It’s not exactly an aphrodisiac, after all. But nothing can kill the mood like a series of wheezy coughing fits or a carbon monoxide scare. The adverse effects of poor indoor air quality are not always so immediate, however, and can have serious long-term consequences for the household. Fortunately, armed with a little knowledge and awareness, maintaining good indoor air quality is a breeze.

The Most Common Household Pollutants

A home’s indoor air quality can be affected by numerous everyday pollutants. Biological pollutants like dust mites, pollen, pet dander, mold, and bacteria are among the most common causes of poor indoor air quality. Improperly calibrated pilot lights on appliances like gas stoves, furnaces, or water heaters can emit dangerous natural gas and carbon monoxide levels.

Outdoor contaminants can also make their way indoors by various means. Examples include smoke, pesticides, and radon – a radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the environment. Particulate matter from old, disintegrating insulation can also wind up in the air and cause serious health risks, particularly if it contains asbestos.

What’s the Difference Between an Air Purifier & Air Sanitizer?

Air purifiers physically capture even microscopic particles and pollutants from the air using heavy-duty filtration systems. Some purifiers use a process called ionization to trap these particles with electromagnetism. On the other hand, air sanitizers effectively neutralize harmful biological pathogens and chemicals using ultraviolet light.

Both systems effectively improve indoor air quality and are usually available as standalone units or can be integrated into an existing HVAC system. Which one is best for any given home will depend on the homeowners’ needs – whether they’re more interested in killing germs, bacteria, and mold spores or simply want to reduce the amount of dust and other particulate matter in the home. Of course, there’s no rule against utilizing both systems!

Other Methods for Improving Indoor Air Quality

Merely keeping the place clean is a big step toward cleaner air – dusting every surface and vacuuming carpets, rugs, and upholstery at least twice per month will help prevent dust accumulation. Turning on a vent fan when using the stove will help remove cooking-related contaminants. Homeowners should make sure all fuel-burning appliances function properly and have the home tested for radon. It’s not a bad idea to open a window or two to help ventilate and refresh the home’s air every so often – even in the winter.

Changing the HVAC filter on time (every 1-3 months for most homes) also goes a long way. Some homeowners may want to start buying HEPA air filters or filters with high MERV ratings, particularly if they suffer from respiratory sensitivities, have several pets, or live in areas with high levels of blowing dust, pollen, or city pollution. However, they should consult with their HVAC company to ensure their unit can handle such heavy-duty filters without a loss in efficiency.

Excellent service, with super fast response when I needed... to get a repair done on a property about to go on the market. Communication was excellent throughout the process and when I thought I had an issue, they made a special trip back to make sure I was happy (turns out the issue didn't exist at all, everything was perfectly done right the first time.). I highly recommend using Alliance Electricread more

Roger and Brandon did a great job installing a new home... generator for us. They also replaced a faulty sump pump in our basement before we travelled out of the country. I was extremely grateful that they could do it so quickly, so we could travel without worrying about a basement flood. I highly recommend them - very more
